The Turkish Musician and Author Zülfü Livaneli | About Omar Alkilani
Date
3, Jun 2020
In Turkish articles published by Cumhuriyet (a prominent Turkish newspaper), Toplumsal (a Turkish social news platform), Gerçek Gündem (a Turkish news outlet), and IGAM (a research center focused on migration studies), renowned Turkish musician and author Zülfü Livaneli condemned the discriminatory language targeted at Syrian guitarist Omar Alkilani. Livaneli emphasized the importance of empathy, warning that anyone could become a refugee and that lacking empathy diminishes one's humanity. Omar Alkilani, who came to Turkey from Syria five years ago and performed music on Istanbul's Istiklal Street, gained the attention of the United Nations. Featured on RS FM's "Akşam Postası" with Atilla Güner, Alkilani expressed his dream of touring and giving concerts in Turkey.
Zülfü Livaneli's remarks were made during an episode of the Sputnik radio Turkish program "Akşam Postası" with Atilla Güner. Atilla Güner is known as a prominent broadcaster in Turkey.
The episode was titled "Suriyeli gitarist sığınmacı Ömer'e yönelik ayrımcı dile Livaneli'den tepki: Kör karanlıklarda nefret üretmeyin." Translated into English, it means "Livaneli reacts to discriminatory language towards Syrian guitarist refugee Omar: Do not generate hatred in blind darkness."
